Guantánamo Detainee Rebuffed
A Federal District Court judge on Tuesday rejected a request by a high-profile detainee at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, that the judge order his release because he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental and physical ailments. The habeas corpus challenge was brought in April on behalf of Shaker Aamer, 45, a Saudi citizen and former British resident. Judge Rosemary M. Collyer gave her rejection in a terse one-page order; an accompanying memorandum opinion explaining her reasoning was sealed. The Justice Department’s filings in the case were also sealed, but Judge Collyer ordered it to file a public version of her order and its documents by July 9.
