Iran’s security forces shot and killed three people and injured at least six others in a raid on 12 July 2014 on Koveh village on the Sunni-Arab populated Island of Qeshm, located off the coast of Southern Iran.
The names and identities of those killed are unknown at this stage, with the incident receiving no mention on Iran’s official police website. Reports vary in the number of dead, with some reporting up to six deaths, including that of a child.
Security forces opened fire on the villagers, who were accused of smuggling fuel into the island, before burning a boat and attempting to confiscate the villagers’ property. The extrajudicial killings of civilians, and the brutal nature in which they were killed, shocked many.
The online newspaper the Huffington Post said regarding the incident, “Tehran is now engaged in persecuting the island’s Arab Sunni inhabitants, regarded as a threat purely due to their religion and ethnicity.”
It continued, “It is forcing them out through state terror and establishing strong state control and the show of extreme violence is intended to send a message that they are no longer welcome.”
Speaking to the Al Arabiya news network, human rights activist Jamal Hosseini said, ”People in this area suffer a double burden of oppression of ethnic and religious discrimination, because they are Sunni and Arabs.”
